LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HEAD BACK TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Difference for Brooklyn Elementary School Students Starts with Junior Achievement High School Heroes
WHO & WHAT:
In Junior Achievement of New York's largest High School Heroes program endeavor to date, juniors and seniors from John Dewey High School in Gravesend will travel to PS 200 to teach 47 k-5th grade classrooms. These local "Heroes" will communicate the importance of staying in school, basic financial and economic literacy and how to successfully navigate life and academic challenges that elementary students may soon face.
The high school volunteers spend the entire day with their elementary class teaching two lessons in the morning, having lunch and recess with their class, and teaching the remaining two lessons in the afternoon. The lessons are built around the New York social studies standards with grade appropriate themes of personal economics, business, work force readiness, and staying in school.
John Dewey High School has a rich history with JANY and the High School Heroes Program. On Tuesday evening, John Dewey High School Heroes educational coordinator and business and accounting teacher, David Salem, who has been actively involved with JANY for 11 years, was honored at the JANY Annual Leadership Awards Gala as the Educator of the Year recipient. This year's theme of the JANY Leadership Awards Gala was "The Difference For Them Starts With You," in reference to the life changing impact that JANY volunteers have on the lives of the students they teach.
High School Heroes is a Junior Achievement program that trains high school volunteers in public speaking, presentation, cultural awareness and time management skills. Students also participate in community service activities, gaining a source for college recommendations and job references, as well as an opportunity to receive scholarships.
