Junior Achievement Business Plan Competition Positions
NYC Students at Epi-center of east coast Generation E-Economy:
E = Education, Empowerment & Entrepreneurship
NEW YORK, NY, Tuesday, April 21, 2009, 2009 — Today, Junior Achievement of New York (JANY) is pleased to announce the 30 student teams who have qualified to compete in the semi -final rounds of the JANY Business Plan Competition. Semi-finalists were selected from an applicant pool of more than 500 aspiring NYC and Long Island high school student entrepreneurs. Initiated in spring 2008 by Junior Achievement of New York (JANY) and founding/presenting sponsor, G.C. Andersen Partners LLC, the JANY Business Plan Competition encourages youth to develop and leverage entrepreneurial thinking as a gateway to innovation, education and economic empowerment.
Since its debut last year, this high impact experiential program has grown in popularity and demand, doubling the number of student entries and participating schools in one year. More than a passing fad, it appears that youth entrepreneurship education is here to stay and with it, a potential to re-ignite a national passion for business and enterprise. New generations of young, business savvy innovators are leading the way: Generation E - inspired by empowerment education and entrepreneurship.
According to the Wall Street Journal, NYC is the fourth-largest U.S. region in terms of venture capital investment, and has been one of the few regional bright spots for start-up companies. "In the current economy, especially in New York City, entrepreneurism could serve as an economic life line to the local economy. Cultivating an interest in entrepreneurism at an early age will help students realize that entrepreneurism can lead to new and profitable opportunities. We are pleased that G.C. Andersen Partners will once again sponsor the competition, which highlights the innovative and unique business ideas of our New York City students," said Doug Schallau, president of JANY.
30 teams will compete in semi-final rounds of the competition, April 21 - May XX. Only Fourteen teams will be selected to compete in the city-wide final competition at Columbia Business School. The finalist teams will pitch innovative business plans to a prestigious panel of venture capitalists and successful entrepreneurs. Plans will be judged using criteria to measure the creativity, feasibility, presentation skills and overall merit of each presented idea.
The JANY Business Plan Competition is also supported in part by Angelsoft, AT&T, Columbia Business School, and the Fu School of Engineering, Columbia University. Winning team members will cash prizes and iPhones provided by JANY Board Member/JA Alum, G. Chris Andersen, founding partner of G.C.
