In spring 2006, JANY launched its first Elementary School Local Business Week program. Through this program, children from all around New York City and Long Island are given the chance to look at local institutions and companies in a new way. Students travel with their classes to see both large and small businesses and government organizations in action. These activities correlate with what they are learning in classes conducted by JANY volunteers. Elementary School Local Business Week provide workplace and career experiences to students in grades K—5, bringing to life the various jobs and responsibilities within a community.
JANY's Elementary School Local Business Week program serves as an enhancement to our proven and successful Job Shadow/work experiences program. This new and innovative program introduces positive pathways to success for younger students — right in their own neighborhoods.
Each participating class enjoys a unique experience at the business with which they are partnered. Students are actively engaged as the professionals answer questions about their roles and responsibilities in the workplace. They demonstrate their job functions and share stories about their educational and career paths. Students are provided with an Activity Book, clipboard, and JA pencil to take with them on their trips. This enables them to easily note their observations throughout the experience. All hand-out materials are designed to capture student reflection before, during, and after their experience.
