ACHIEVING ABOVE AND BEYOND ROLL CALL...

As part of our National Volunteer Week awareness celebration, each month Junior Achievement of New York will recognize volunteers who have gone above and beyond to inspire and prepare NYC and Long Island students to succeed.

Educators, students, community partners, if you know of a volunteer who has gone above and beyond to support the JA mission, let us know about it. Email us at

Xuewei "Sharon" Wang is a Baruch College volunteer at PS 42. She teaches the Elementary School "Our Nation" curriculum to a bilingual fifth-grade class. We recognize Xuewei for taking the initiative to translate the entire program into Mandarin Chinese. Way to go Xuewei! JANY thanks you on behalf of the students of New York City.

Nelli Bodrenko - is a Baruch College volunteer who taught the JA Business Ethics curriculum at Norman Thomas High School this year. After completing JA Business Ethics, she realized that most of her students lacked basic survival skills (i.e., when asked what they would take to a deserted island to help them survive, most of them said "Food...and iPods.") Working with a professor and the classroom teacher, she took the initiative to visit the class to prepare and deliver an extra lesson (not JA) about making good choices and its connection to survival. Way to go Nelli! JANY thanks you on behalf of the students of New York City.

Siwen Liao - is a Baruch College volunteer, who taught at PS 111 this year. He recruited 4 of his friends to register as volunteers with JANY this year. He is working on starting a JA Club next year to recruit volunteers to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. Way to go Siwen! JANY thanks you on behalf of the students of New York City.

Joshua Kinnebrew - is an Ernst & Young volunteer who taught JA It's My Business at Mott Hall II this year. Every session, he would bring supplemental current articles about entrepreneurs to keep the students engaged and to show them how what they are learning has real world applications. A powerful and charismatic communicator, when Joshua spoke all of his students listened. Way to go Joshua! JANY thanks you on behalf of the students of New York City.

Connie Hum - is a McKinsey volunteer. Each year, McKinsey participates in one 1-day teaching event at PS 71. Connie participated for the first time in Spring 200, teaching JA Economics for Success. When Connie took over as volunteer coordinator for the event, the number of classes, students and volunteers rose dramatically. As a result of Connie's "can do "efforts, McKinsey reached all of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders at PS 71 on Friday April 11, 2008. Way to go Connie! JANY thanks you on behalf of the students of New York City.
